August 30, 2012 on the kitchen chair

Eliza's school is traditionally closed the last three days before Labor Day so the teachers can prepare their classrooms, which means us working parents have to figure out what to do with our kids for at least three days every summer. Yesterday, Eliza spent the day at her BFF Rowan's house with a sitter sent by Bright Horizons, the childcare company contracted through Rowan's dad's law firm. Today I "worked" from home and took care of Rowan and Eliza. I put that in quotes because while I did actually do work, keeping these two occupied was even more work.

The other thing about the kids being out of school for three days starting in the middle of the week is that for kids who take naps during the school day (even though they may fight them to the end on the weekends), their schedule is completely thrown off. This was the case yesterday and today and Rowan and Eliza were completely exhausted by about 3pm. Eliza had an epic meltdown, which almost ended in a crash in the hallway, but Rowan, in her attempt to step around Eliza, instead stepped on her and blocked what would have been a good crash shot. However, as luck would have it, Eliza got up and moved to the kitchen chair. Literally. Rolled herself up in a little ball and went to sleep. Here she is basically in fetal position, where she slept for only about 3-5 minutes until Rowan successfully roused her with the unmistakable sound of veggie sticks being taken out of the snack drawer. Josh and Alie, Rowan's parents, both agreed that even though it was just a few minutes, it still counted as a legitimate crash.

Tomorrow the girls are with my husband, David, along with Ava, Eliza's big sister, who is also off of school tomorrow. I'm guessing by the time I get home, he'll be the one rolled in a ball on a chair in fetal position.
