December 16, 2012 in the car

It's not that the car is such an unusual spot for her to crash, but this time it was more about the fact that she fell asleep in the middle of writing her life story.

November 17, 2012 on the living room floor

Today was cold and rainy and the last soccer game of the season was cancelled. The team's soccer party went as planned though and the girls got their very first trophy. Eliza came home from the party, crashed on the floor, woke up a few minutes later to cuddle with her trophy and went right back to sleep in the same spot.

I guess rainy days and soccer parties always get her to go down.

And I guess I just dated myself by about 35 years with that last sentence.

November 2, 2012 on our bedroom floor....

.....on the iPad.

Eliza woke up last night at 1:30am, 3:30am and then was up for the day at 6:15am. This crash was pretty much expected.

October 6, 2012 at Target

I guess 4-year olds still need naps. Wishing my little crasher the happiest of birthdays.

Crash update (one hour later):

Came home from Target, Eliza came into the house and crashed on the living room floor. Clearly birthdays are exhausting (and today wasn't even her party).

September 16, 2012 under the kitchen table

Tonight is the first night of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and apparently one hour of family services at temple was just too much for my little party girl. After an hour of the services, which was complete with lively music, a fun story by the rabbi and four trips to the bathroom, we came home to dip some apples in honey (a Jewish tradition symbolizing the hope for a sweet new year), and then the real fun began. Eliza started melting down because she had completed the scratch art project I found for the girls today in the $1 section at Target and insisted that I either give her a new one or give her the one I gave to Ava (big sister) to finish. The constant chorus from me of "I don't have any more and Ava is finishing her own" didn't have any bearing on the situation, so instead I chose to ignore her and finish reading the Vanity Fair article on Tom Cruise and "wife auditioning" (which I highly recommend reading) at the kitchen table. I knew once she crawled under the table to try and get my attention - and I not being able to be bothered because I really needed to know more about Nicole Kidman being labeled as a Suppressive Person by Scientologists - we would most likely have a crash. Three minutes later and voila.

To those who observe, wishing you a very happy, healthy and restful new year.

September 2, 2012 in the bathroom

Today we hosted a BBQ for Eliza's soccer team (Go Pink Panthers!) and their families. We started cleaning up immediately after everyone left and found our sleepy little kicker in her bathroom about 5 minutes later. I'd say it was a good party.

August 30, 2012 on the kitchen chair

Eliza's school is traditionally closed the last three days before Labor Day so the teachers can prepare their classrooms, which means us working parents have to figure out what to do with our kids for at least three days every summer. Yesterday, Eliza spent the day at her BFF Rowan's house with a sitter sent by Bright Horizons, the childcare company contracted through Rowan's dad's law firm. Today I "worked" from home and took care of Rowan and Eliza. I put that in quotes because while I did actually do work, keeping these two occupied was even more work.

The other thing about the kids being out of school for three days starting in the middle of the week is that for kids who take naps during the school day (even though they may fight them to the end on the weekends), their schedule is completely thrown off. This was the case yesterday and today and Rowan and Eliza were completely exhausted by about 3pm. Eliza had an epic meltdown, which almost ended in a crash in the hallway, but Rowan, in her attempt to step around Eliza, instead stepped on her and blocked what would have been a good crash shot. However, as luck would have it, Eliza got up and moved to the kitchen chair. Literally. Rolled herself up in a little ball and went to sleep. Here she is basically in fetal position, where she slept for only about 3-5 minutes until Rowan successfully roused her with the unmistakable sound of veggie sticks being taken out of the snack drawer. Josh and Alie, Rowan's parents, both agreed that even though it was just a few minutes, it still counted as a legitimate crash.

Tomorrow the girls are with my husband, David, along with Ava, Eliza's big sister, who is also off of school tomorrow. I'm guessing by the time I get home, he'll be the one rolled in a ball on a chair in fetal position.

August 25, 2012 - April 16, 2011

Welcome to Eliza's Random Sleeping Spots. For the last year and a half I've been documenting on Facebook the completely random places my daughter, Eliza, falls asleep in her attempts to fight taking a nap - a battle she's been waging since was 18 months old. Each post on Facebook is entitled Today's Crash and features the date and location of each narcoleptic moment. Recently, my friend, Evan, suggested I start a blog and catalog these all in one place. Given that I intend on embarrassing the hell out of her in 10 years with these at her bat mitzvah, I thought it was a good idea (that and I'm not so sure Facebook will be here in 10 years either).

I have no idea how much longer these crashes will continue but I will post them here as long as she has them. The following are all of them dating back to April of 2011 until today. They go from most recent to the first one, so you may want to read from the bottom up.

August 25, 2012 (Part II) in the kitchen
After waking up from the table in the playroom, Eliza moved to the kitchen where she complained about how dinner didn't smell good and then laid down. The rest is history.

August 25, 2012 (Part I) in the playroom

This was probably the result of 6 hours of sleep the night before, a morning birthday party followed by 2 hours in the pool.

In her birthday suit. Modesty pillow added by Mommy (there is actually a limit to how much I'll embarrass her one day at her bat mitzvah).

February 25, 2012 (Part I) on Mommy
After getting up from under the dining room table (see next photo), she crawled in my lap and went back to sleep.

September 17, 2011 in the kitchen
This one occurred after a 30-minute meltdown about the fact that all the purple cups were in the dishwasher. Apparently milk doesn't taste the same from a pink cup.

September 5, 2011 in the hallway
She actually fell asleep in the car and was carried into her bed. About 10 minutes later I found her here. She apparently needed to crash on her own terms.
